History of Pura Ulun Danu Bratan Temple
The water temple, built in the 17th century, is situated on the edge of Lake Beratan in the mountains of Bedugul. It is characterized by Merus (pagodas) that are dedicated to the Lake Goddess as well as the gods of Mount Batur and Moung Gunung Agung. The Pura Ulun Danu Bratan Temple gets its name from the location where it’s built—Beratan Lake. According to archaeological data which include a sarcophagus and a stone board that dates back to 500 BC, the Pura Ulun Danu Bratan Temple has a rich history that dates back to the Mengwi kingdom. Ulun Danu Beratan is one of the most prominent Balinese Hindu temples.
Within the walls of the complex, the following can be seen:
- Putra Pentaran Agung Temple – This can be seen upon entering Candi Bentar (split gate) towards Beratan. This temple serves to adore the majesty trinity of Tri Purusha Shiva, namely Shiva, Sada Shiva, and Parama Shiva.
- Pura Dalen Durwa Temple – This temple is comprised of three shrines: Pelinggih Dalen Purwa (a place to worship the goddess Durga and Lord Rudra; source of prosperity), Bale Panjang (a place for offerings), and Bale Murda Mani (a place for discussions).
- Pura Taman Beji Temple – Especially important for 2 things: serves as a place for the Ngebejiang ceremony (purifying the ritual paraphernalia) and Melasti (Hindu Balinese purification ceremony).
- Pura Lingga Petak Temple – An important temple which holds the sacred well containing holy water (Tirta Ulun Danu). This temple is featured on the country’s IDR 50,000 banknote.
- Pura Prajapati Temple – Located under a Banyan tree, this temple is the first temple visitors will encounter. It is the place of goddess Durga.
- Buddhist Stupa – Features a Buddha statues that indicates the sign of harmony and inter-religious life.
