Member Ross Macfarlane was shocked and delighted to be awarded with a Trophy for winning the 2017 Handara Order of Merit. This is a league competition with each of the twice monthly Hillbillies competitions contributing points (5 for first place, down to 1 for fifth and a half point to all who played). He said afterwards “I thought Shan had forgotten all about this, what a lovely surprise”.

Indeed the 2018 Order of Merit, now on the home straight looks to be a tight contest between holder Ross and Hillbillies Captain Carl Sandstrom. After a long season there are only 5 more competitions until the bar closes. Carl is quoted as saying “I see this competition as a true test of perseverance and performance over 12 months and I hope the best man wins. That’ll be me.”

RYDER CUP

The end of September featured a long awaited Golf event, the bi-ennial challenge between the best Golfers in the United States and those of Europe. As ever, the Americans look stronger on paper but struggle to take that advantage to the fairways. Based in Paris, the course was laid out with accuracy rather than length in mind and the Americans took the bait, landing more often than not in the challenging rough. The consequent European victory was observed and celebrated by a cheerful group of Handara Golfers who took advantage of a special stay and watch offer put out by the club. As Indonesia television once again didn’t show the tournament, the option of streaming was employed, and although not 100% reliable did give us a great flavor of the amazing atmosphere over in France.

To celebrate such a fun weekend, a new chipping contest was launched. All those with the required 50,000 IDR entry fee were welcome,  and the challenge was to chip from the barbecue area to nearest the pin. Three balls, a borrowed sand wedge and a sharply downhill pitch onto a front pin made it a real challenge. Pak Aru won the money and Kindly donated his winnings to the kitty where it was promptly turned into a case of cold Bintangs. A generous gesture (thanks Aru) marked a fitting end to a super weekend.

Selamat Les Blues

AMAZING 67

On the 26th of August, Par 5 member Charlie Ryals playing off 4, shot seven under his handicap. Out in 33, back in 34 his round featured 9, yes that’s nine birdies making a course score of 67. Whilst not the course record (that’s 65) it’s the best round that’s been shot at Handara for many a year. Congratulations Charlie!!!

ROB PEETOOM GOLF TOURNAMENT

For the second year, Rob Peetoom, Bali’s most famous hair and beauty expert held his Golf Tournament at Bali Handara. A great turnout and super weather was present to see Charlie Ryals (yes, that man again) romp home in first place with a gross 72. Well done Charlie, can you give us mere mortals a chance, now and again.
For those who need some help in the Hair & Beauty area, Rob has branches in Petitenget & Beachwalk Mall and would be delighted to help you out.

In the last newsletter the success of the walking tournament was remarked upon. It seems to have started a trend. The club has acquired more trolleys or push carts (I’m not entirely sure about the nomenclature of such things, especially when writing for an International audience) and they are getting used. Of course, the 55% discount of members green fees has to be helping but there are many people very happy. Member Ian Wedding remarked that he plays better Golf when he walks as he has time to consider his shot from a distance, more truly gauging the shot that is required to get him up the fairway and onto the green. He said his caddy is happy too as she can get fit for free and lose a little unwanted weight.

Marketing have produced this lovely poster that’s now hanging in the clubhouse, reminding us, should we need it of the benefits of walking while playing golf.

So I encourage you to give it a try. I’m finding it very therapeutic even if I do need a little breather when arriving at tee boxes 2 and 18. Long live Fit Golf.

We’ve had 3 Lucy Cups since the last newsletter. Neil Alkemade won the August cup and those of you alert enough to remember the last newsletter will note he also won it in July. So congratulations to Pak Neil for back to back wins and his handicap duly docked two shots for the remained of Lucy Cup tournaments in 2018.

Cliff Rees won the cup in September which was a great performance as Pak Cliff was still nursing a recently broken wrist. Well done Mr. Rees.

And last weekend Aru Santhrian had a fabulous round shooting an 88 (including a 40 on the front) which with his 14 handicap gave him a net 74, handing him the Cup. In the absence of previous holder Cliff Rees, the cup was presented by co-founder of the Tournament, Mr. Don Lucy. High honor indeed. Well done Pak Aru.

New Playground

If you’ve teed off from hole 1 recently and dragged your eyes away from the massive area of OB on your left, you won’t have failed to miss the new playground on your right. Designed with children in mind, the playground helps to make Bali Handara a more complete resort by giving the young and young at heart somewhere to expend some energy and make adventures. Well worth a look if your family includes little ones.

Handara Gate

It seems Social media is changing the face of Bali. Everywhere tourists are making selfies and posting the pictures onto the interweb. Instagram seems to be particularly popular with it’s #hashtag system. Indeed venture onto the site and enter #handaragate and you will see more than 1,000 posts featuring our club entrance. Almost all of these are from 2018 with the oldest only 26 months old. The club, in what I consider to be a master stroke, is now charging a small fee for the taking of such photos and encouraging these camera jockeys to pop up to the breeze cafe for refreshments.

This has a couple of benefits. Firstly such are the numbers of people entering, the revenue generated is significant, helping to the profitability of the club. Additionally it generates throughput for the kitchen, helping to keep the ingredients fresh and the staff busy. I also prefer the atmosphere in the cafe when there are lots of people there enjoying the beautiful view and serene ambiance. Well done Team Handara.

Are your kids interested in taking up the game of golf? At Handara Resorts, we get plenty of guests who come to Bali for a holiday and enjoy a sunny day out to play golf as a family with our professional golfers.

In the article today, our in-house golf professionals have compiled a collection of advice to get your child golfing in the right direction.

Maximize Your Child’s Practice Time

Regularly take your kids to the course or driving range and choose a time when the sun isn’t at its highest peak. Early in the morning or sunset are the best times to avoid strong rays. This is also highly recommended if you and your family are planning to stay with us at Handara Resorts.

With gorgeous golf courses overlooking Bali’s beautiful tropical greenery, we guarantee your family and children will have an enjoyable time playing golf. If you are interested to reserve a time for your child to optimize his or her golf skills, book a tee time with one of our golf professionals so you don’t have to worry about holding back another group.

Have Patience and Let Them Call the Shots

This may come to a challenge for some parents who have golf running through their veins. We all want our children to successfully play golf the right way. However, as golfers, we tend to teach them the sport in a firm manner as if the children were back at school. This is the opposite of introducing golf as a fun sport. Learning a firm grip on the golf club is fundamental, but going into great detail and adding unwanted pressure on that one topic can result negatively. They are children if it’s one thing that’s on their minds while they play golf is that they are having fun. Let them explore the game on their own. Let them lead and be there for them when they want to know something they’re curious about. Remember, you are there to do what they want to do, not what you want to do.

Provide Them with Suitable Equipment

There are 2 common problems Junior’s face when starting out. The first one is using golf clubs that are just too long, too stiff, and too heavy. And the second being the result of the first problem is that the junior holding the club will swing the club too flat relative to his or her height. Other than our in-house golf professionals at your service, Handara Resorts also provides guests with golf club rentals to save the worry of bringing your own and lugging it everywhere during your holiday.

Communicate How to Play on Their Level

Communication between a child and the instructor is crucial. Teaching golf should be expressed at the child’s level of understanding, and this should also be taken literally. As the child is comfortable with their positioning, kneel down, make eye contact, and explain what’s next. Watch what you say and how you say it because terms such as “wide arc” won’t come to them like a breeze. Replace “wide arc” with “big circle” or “descending blow” with “thump the ground” because children need a visual representation in their heads in order to execute the next step. Don’t teach them the everyday golf frustrations adult golfers face every day, always be there to lend a helping hand.

Golf Carnival for kids teach by our professional golfers

As you can see, teaching your children golf depends on how we are a role model for them. If you’re feeling hesitant to be the one to introduce golf to your children, don’t worry as Handara Resorts in Bedugul have in-house professional golfers instructors to lead your child in the right direction.

Our resort facilitates all player levels, with a driving range to get those shots right, a pro shop just in case your child is hooked on the game, and golf club rentals to suit your child’s needs. Contact us for special promo’s and packages revolving around our golf facilities.

If you are a golfing enthusiast, you appreciate how important the right driver is. Many golfers spend countless hours on the course yet they never enjoy the experience because they use the wrong drivers. Worse still, many others spend thousands of dollars but this never solves their swing problems.

Well, choosing the right driver doesn’t have to be too hard. You can easily up your game by choosing the right drivers using the following tips:

Choosing the Right Club Head

This is one of the toughest decisions when you hit the sports store.

There are three club head sizes:

  • Small cub head – This is lightweight, allowing for better
control of your swing. However, you might be sacrificing distance in order to have a better shot with lower risk for errors.
  • Large club head – This has a larger mass, which is an advantage for longer shots. It also creates more momentum and is more forgiving on a miss hit.

Medium-sized club heads give a compromise between the small and large club head. When buying, consider your needs; do you want better shots over a distance or are you looking for better control?

Choosing the Right Shaft

Golf Driver

The shaft can be said to be the motor of your golf club. It largely determines your swing performance. But it is also one of the most neglected aspects when shopping for a golf driver. The material you chose determines the flex which is the bend of the shaft. Flex is the ability of the club to load during a back swing. The slower your swing, the more flex you will need while for a golfer with a fast swing, a stiffer shaft is recommended.

Choosing the Loft

The measure of the angle of the club head is important. A greater loft offers more control but less distance. For slow swings, greater loft is required while for a faster swing, less loft is ideal.

The Right Driver Length

The length of your club determines your positioning on your ball during a swing. A longer shaft gives more distance but is harder to control.

Talk To A Golfing Professional

If you really want to enjoy your game, be ready to get some advice.  A golfing pro at your store or even your regular club will give you insightful tips on the right length, best brands, golfing strategies and so much more. A golfing pro at your local store will fit you with the right driver, which saves your game and a lot of money.

Take your time to research about golf drivers and you will enjoy a better game. Stay tuned to our blog to get more information about Bali and Golf tips.

Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Sam Snead, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and Jordan Spieth; what do these names have in common? If you can recognize any of them, it is highly likely you are a golfing fan. If you have read their history, you will learn that most started out just like you; with a passion for learning the right tricks.

Handara Golf & Resort Bali love to share about golf tips and any information about golf. In this article, we will talk about Putter Length.

 Choosing a putter length

putter length you should choose

One of the most important factors to improve your game is of course learning the right equipment to use. It is true that you have different sticks but the putter has been found to determine the number of strokes, meaning getting the right length is crucial for any golfer. Putters come in different length, weight, lies angles and shapes.

However, the best golfers will tell you that the length of a putter is the most critical as it determines how well you hit the ball. If the putter is too long or too short, you will be forced to compensate with your body leading to missed hits, poor set up, inconsistency in the ball’s paths and even damage to your back.

How do you find the right putter length then? You need a putter, a few balls and a piece of tape for this activity.

  • Address a putt as usual (legs not bent, arms bent at the elbow, and a slight comfortable bend at the waist towards the golf ball). With the putter firmly in grip, take a normal stance over the ball.
  • Pick one of the other balls and drop it from your nose. Try this with a few more balls and note where the balls fall.
  • With the readings of the position of the other balls, you will learn this; if the ball drops between the ball you were to hit and your feet, the putter is too long. If the ball drops outside of the ball on the ground and your feet, the putter is too short.
  • To rectify the length problem, choke up on the putter if the ball falls inside the space between your feet and the ball on the ground (too short). Choke down on the putter if the ball falls outside the space between your feet on and the ball on the ground.
  • After determining the length of your putter, use the tape to mark the top of your hand but this should be done after several tries to hit the ball on the ground.

Still struggling with missed hits, hope this article has given you hints on a few ways to improve that swing. Stay tuned to get more information about Bali, Golf information & tips in Handara Blog!

When you play golf, there are certain things that you should avoid in order to play a good game as follows:

play golfDistractions – During downtime, the worst thing you can do is allow your mind to wander. These distractions are the best way to get your current shot wrong. It is better to keep your mind focused on your current play by asking questions like, ‘what is the best angle to come in from? How is the lie of this ball going to affect the shot?’ With such questions, you will be able to keep your focus on the shot that you are currently taking and arrest your wandering mind.

Score Obsession – If you are only focused on the scores, you will easily get distracted. The reason is that it creates tension and anxiety. Create a mental routine that will keep you focused on the shot you are currently making. Take a deep breath and then turn your attention to the shot you are about to take. Understand that you only have control over your current shot, so keep your focus there and make a relaxed and confident swing.

Emotional reactions – Everybody makes a poor shot from time to time, but reacting emotionally to it and allowing frustration to set it can make your game even poorer. Your decision making will be affected and your tension levels will rise. The game will cease to be enjoyable to you. With a good reaction to a poor shot, you will be able to keep the proper mindset needed to take the next shot. Learn from your mistakes and move on.

No Course Management – It is important to know your limitations and your strengths whenever you are on the course. Play the game based on your regular patterns and not on ego. This will ensure that you are more relaxed and comfortable when playing, which will lead to a better game. Making great decisions on the course is based on the game you usually play with confidence. Do that and you will see better scores.

Loss of confidence – You need to believe that you can successfully hit a shot. When you get on the course, forget about worst case scenarios and poorly taken shots. Get rid of the fear and doubt and begin visualizing the perfect shot. Ensure that you have positive self-talk and work on the shots that generally trouble you. You will do great!

By avoiding those things when you play golf will help you get good golf experiences. Now, you are ready to enjoy our golf course at Handara Golf and Resort even more.

A slice is one of the most common shots with amateur players and it is also the most frustrating eventually. There is nothing as demoralizing as hoping you had made a good shot only for you to see the ball going into the woods. A slice curves hard to the right, which in most cases takes you to the woods. It is commonly caused by poor grip, open club face, poor stance and an outside-to-in path. If you are regularly finding yourself in the woods during play, here are some ideas to correct a golf slice in order to enjoy your game more:

golf slice

Don’t Get Too Close To The Ball
This is a big problem with most players. The main problem with getting too close to the ball is that you will get an outside-in path, which drives your ball too hard to the right. To avoid this, extend your arms fully as you address the ball. Go on and flex your knees while at the same time keeping your back straight. Try to bring down the club behind the ball; if the club is perfectly behind the ball, your arms are extended and back is still straight, you are at the right distance from the ball.

Work on Your Feet Position
A slice occurs if your feet and shoulders are not well aligned with the target. Your feet and shoulders should be square and in line with the target. To attain this, you must work on your stance; take your golf club and place it on the ground pointed on the target. Your shoulders should point straight at the target while your feet should be in line with the club on the ground. If you notice your feet positioned back from the club, you are at risk of slicing your shot.

Hand-eye Coordination
Poor club and ball contact could be costing you the game. If you hit the ball outside the center of the club face, you will no doubt slice your shot. Bad contact is common if you are tense and you have to train yourself to watch the ball when aiming. Hand and eye coordination works magic in treating a slice.

These correcting a golf slice tips will help improve your game but for them to work you have to consciously apply them. The next time you are playing, remember each tip and it will be easier to apply the same. Still struggling to stay out of the woods? Go out and try these tips. Stay tune in our blog for more update!
